Understanding Your Medicare Options
Medicare isn't one-size-fits-all. Here's how the main plan types differ so you can make a confident, informed choice.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Bundles Original Medicare (Parts A & B) plus additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing into a single plan, usually through an HMO or PPO network. Often has low or $0 premiums.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Works alongside Original Medicare to cover out-of-pocket costs like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. Offers broader provider access with predictable costs.
Part D (Prescription Drug Plans)
Standalone plans that add prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare or a Medigap plan. Choosing the right Part D plan can significantly reduce your medication costs.
Know When You Can Enroll or Switch Plans
Missing an enrollment window can mean waiting months for coverage or paying a penalty. Here's what you need to know.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
A 7-month window beginning 3 months before your 65th birthday month and ending 3 months after. This is your first opportunity to enroll in Medicare Parts A, B, and a supplement or Advantage plan.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Runs October 15 – December 7 each year. During AEP, Medicare beneficiaries can switch, drop, or join Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, with changes taking effect January 1.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Triggered by qualifying life events such as losing employer coverage, moving, or changes in Medicaid eligibility. Allows enrollment or plan changes outside the standard windows.
Not sure which window applies to you? A licensed agent can review your situation at no cost.

Common Medicare Questions, Answered
Get clear answers to the questions that matter most before you choose a plan.
What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare and often bundles dental, vision, and drug coverage into one plan with network restrictions. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to cover your out-of-pocket costs and typically allows access to any provider that accepts Medicare.
Will my current doctors be covered?
It depends on the plan type. Medicare Supplement plans generally allow you to see any Medicare-accepting provider nationwide. Medicare Advantage plans use networks (HMO or PPO), so it's important to verify your doctors are in-network before enrolling.
When can I enroll or change my Medicare plan?
Most people first enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period around their 65th birthday. After that, the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) is the primary window to make changes. Special Enrollment Periods are available for qualifying life events.
Is there a cost to use National Insurance Brokers?
No. Our Medicare consultations and plan comparisons are completely free to you. Agents are paid by the insurance carriers, so there is no charge for our service at any stage.
Can I switch plans if I'm not happy with my current coverage?
Yes, in most cases. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) allows you to switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans each year. A licensed agent can review your current plan and identify better options for your situation.
